Welcome to the Metaverse

Facebook's parent company Meta recently announced its collaboration with big brands such as Balenciaga, Prada, and Thom Browne with the goal of improving the quality of its newly established digital fashion store. With this partnership, luxury fashion will become more accessible but not necessarily in the real world but rather in a metaverse where an avatar and digital fashion represents you. He also shared that “digital goods will be an important way to express yourself in the metaverse and a big driver of the creative economy.”

As Meta’s founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, stated “I’m really grateful and proud that these brands are joining us to kick off fashion in the metaverse.” He also added that “a lot of the dream is to make [fashion] accessible to anyone. If you want to design fashion today, you need the physical materials and equipment, but in the future, anyone with a computer and an imagination will be able to come up with ideas for this.” This is just one of the many perks of digital fashion.

Sustainable?

With digital fashion, there is also an angle of sustainability at play here as well. As already mentioned, to create something, you need materials, and not every person or designer is considering sustainability when purchasing or using materials. But when it comes to digital fashion, this material aspect isn’t applicable.

There is much less of a concern needed when considering sustainability, which is the beauty of digital fashion. You just need a computer, but that computer is used for other tasks as well, which emphasizes the sustainability of the process as well.

In a way, digital fashion is significantly more sustainable than today’s tangible fashion industry, considering that in the real world there are many more avenues for unsustainability when it comes to the physical production of goods.

New Form of Expression

Vice President of Fashion Partnerships, Eva Chen, also described how fashion is ultimately a form of art and self-expression” and is excited to see what comes from Balenciaga, Prada, and Thom Browne joining Meta to sell digital fashion and “fashionable avatars.”

Zuckerberg also expressed that “it takes a certain confidence to wear shoulders-to-toes Prada” but thinks that in the metaverse, he “may just have that confidence” for his avatar to wear an entire Prada look. Digital fashion is on the rise and will transform and expand the current fashion industry so stay tuned and maybe start thinking about how you want to exist in the metaverse with your own fashionable avatar!
