The story of Yoona

Yoona.ai replaced the point where technology was missing, a technology that would make it easier for designers to calculate what to design and also a system that is really holistic, and sustainable. Anna is the founder of Yoona, and in this article, you will discover how this interaction between technology and fashion came to life, its purpose and mission, as well as its future goals. She starts, “I started studying Fine Arts and then fashion design, then I became a designer and had my own fashion label. I worked in Zalando, and then I recognized that there was some technology missing. I wanted to better calculate what to sell and what to design and also wanted to have technical support so that I don't have to do all the steps. This was actually the beginning, I wanted to better calculate what to sell and what to design and also wanted to have technical support so that I don't have to do all the steps. We've also already been the first one in Berlin to do digital fashion shows. Today it’s called the Metaverse, but we did it already in 2019. We created all the digital fashion shows and only four outfits have been sewn. So we did a virtual reality and then with videos, and augmented reality, we tested everything. And it was actually super cool because then you come to enjoy your own fashion show as a designer because you only got four outfits and the rest is already digitally made.

What inspired me to create Yoona was the fact that this technology was missing, a technology that would make it easier for designers to calculate what to design. I also wanted to make it really holistic, and sustainable, but it was not enough for me to just use sustainable fabrics. So I thought, maybe we have to change processes to be more sustainable and this all together made me start learning to code, and then, later on, I recognized better how to manage and bring people together, bringing this concept forward.” Yoona.ai is an automation tool that shortens a design process to just a few simple clicks.

How it works

The question that we all might think about now, is how does a fashion automation tool such as Yoona.ai work? Anna explains that once you use Yoona.ai “On this platform, you can book different features and services, or assistants called design assistants, but you can also call them services. Once you book them, first are data analyzers. The next one is creating color concepts and then also doing color codes in similar colors automatically. Normally, companies need at least three people for three months to do that.

So we analyze data and then we provide the color concept and then you can directly go into product design. So then out of the data, the product is created, but it's not like you have trousers, shirts, dresses, or shoes. It's mixed data, you have for every product a different service or a different assistant. For example, if the assistant is trained with shoe data, you will get shoes. Then you can book the different services for the product. And then you can also book 3D services, you can either get directly 3D designs out of the products created by AI, or you upload your own photos from your already sewn garment or sketches and then we create designs out of them and then we also provide augmented reality that people in the company can talk about the designs and don't have to sew prototyping. The idea is that everybody can have a look and communicate on this platform, so they don't have to send back and forth prototypes. Also, the idea is to get different API's of different startups who are completing the value chain with us. In the end, it's a tool for me as a designer and for the product creation team, which implements everything and brings together and makes it easy to design faster and also sustainable.”

According to Anna, expansion of digital fashion and digital design in the Metaverse is important, because then it will reduce project production. For example, if you just talk about Metaverse fashion shows, the designers and companies create these fashion shows but most of these designs because they have to be kind of extra, they are under in the warehouses. As Anna says: “They had a metaverse fashion show where we only produced four outfits. That was enough. And then we even mentioned that four outfits are okay, but not 20. And then I think it's super important also for this industry to digitize and it's a good motivation for this industry to get into the metaverse, they have to digitize their processes. So that's what I see and it’s what we also provide, the whole digitized process. They can use it for the metaverse, but they can also go with it to production because we won't stop physical products. “

As regards Anna, the goal of Yoona.ai is that people need this platform that everybody will use worldwide and bring everyone together worldwide and build a holistic digital value chain. “Sometimes we said we will be the Tesla of the fashion industry, but for me, it's important that we change this industry holistically and the future in this industry is collaborative, that everybody works together.” And Anna’s personal sustainability definition is: “I’m technology-biased, so my definition of sustainability is combined with technology to calculate better and use fewer resources. It’s about using technology in the right way to create a holistic, sustainable industry.”

When asked about advice that she would give to young entrepreneurs that would want to found their sustainable business, Anna suggests, “You should have a look at what does already exist, and what do we need? And then look for the next puzzle. But we need to create this holistic, sustainable value chain and just if you have an idea, just start, because if you don't do anything, nothing will change. Even if it’s just an idea and you don’t know yet how to work on it, just start, it’s the only way to move forward.”
